The University of Dayton Information Technologies Risk Management Office serves the University by providing security information, education and services and acts as the contact point for IT security and abuse issues. We are committed to protecting computing and information resources and complying with all information-related laws, regulations, and policies. See below for descriptions of some important security terms. Your familiarity with these terms is a good first step in maintaining a secure campus computing environment.


Confidential Data

Confidential data refers to business sensitive and personally identifiable information (PII) not intended for disclosure outside the organization. Confidential data includes Family Educational Records Protection Act (FERPA) data, Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) records, and Payment Card Industry (PCI) data.

Encryption

Encryption is the conversion of data into a form which cannot be easily understood by unauthorized users. Encryption ensures University of Dayton confidential data is protected against unauthorized access.

Spam

Spam is many copies of the same message sent in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services.

Workstation Security

Improperly configured computer systems can be compromised, allowing data to be destroyed or stolen. Compromised workstations can even be used to attack other systems. Protecting the University of Dayton network begins with the proper security software and updates on the individual workstation, helping prevent the system from being compromised.
