UDit Alerts

Alerts are notifications of changes to the normal business of the University of Dayton's central IT systems. UDit maintains many of the systems you rely on every day. On occasion, we must disable a service for a short time for regular upkeep and maintenance. We strive to cause as little inconvenience to you as possible. Alerts informs you of planned downtimes in advance, new system requirements and services, unplanned outages and other timely IT information.

Username Changeover Summer 2010

We're running out of usernames. To fix this problem, we've determined a new method that will allow us to generate unique usernames indefinitely. Throughout the summer, UD usernames will be changed to comply with our new system. And don't worry -- we'll be sending reminders so you don't forget.

What is my new username?

New student usernames will be your last name + first initial + number (e.g. Rudy Flyer = flyerr1)

New facstaff username: first initial + last name + number (e.g. John Smith = jsmith1, June Smith = jsmith2)

To view your new username, login at http://porches.udayton.edu with your current LDAP/Novell username and password, click the “Account” icon, and look for the field marked “new username”.

What happens to my old e-mail address(es)?

All current email addresses will continue to work. You also now have a new address: username@notes.udayton.edu

Where can I go for more information?

Visit Summer 2010 Username Change or contact the computer help desk at (937)229-3888, helpdesk@udayton.edu, or stop by Miriam Hall 03.

Web Registration Work-Around for Problem with Immediate Verification

What: Web Registration

When: On-going

Affected Areas:  Web Registration

Additional Information:

Students are registering for courses but the Schedule view does not show they are registered even though they are, in fact registered.  We have been working with the vendors, both Datatel and IBM, over a period of time to resolve this problem but have not had success.  The only fix that has had any impact is run overnight, every night to update the day's schedule changes.

Students can verify their registrations immediately after registering by going to Web Advisor at webadvisor.udayton.edu, logging in, and selecting Transcripted Courses/Grades.  At the beginning of the transcript, registered courses are listed.  If you would like greater detail on this problem, please see Technical Updates.

Internet Service in Residential Areas at Capacity;
Message to Students from UDit CIO, Dr. Tom Skill

The student residential Internet connection has been hitting its maximum capacity over the last few nights. UDit is well aware of this "bandwidth" capacity problem and have been planning for a 50% increase in bandwidth since early last summer. We anticipate expanding the residential bandwidth from 200 Mb to 300 Mb in early November.

While much of the traffic is typical academic and social data uses, we have noticed a substantial increase in the number of users who are streaming high-definition videos over the residential network. As you might guess, this kind of use really consumes our bandwidth and since the network is a shared community resource, all users suffer when the network capacity is exceeded.

If you do find that the Internet connection from your residence is working very slowly, you may want to consider using the network in the Rec Plex, KU, the Library or any other academic buildings. The academic-side of campus has a separate network that is typically under-used in the evenings and at night (when the residential network is very busy).

We know that it is much easier to work from home and that is why we are expanding the residential bandwidth. However, we have limited resources to support things like HD movies, so unless we reduce those uses, we may never be able to ensure a speedy residential network.

The staff at UDit is working hard to ensure that you have an available and robust network to support your academic needs. Please feel free to share your suggestions with us on how we might better serve you.

Postpone Windows 7 & Snow Leopard Upgrades

UDit recommends you delay upgrading to Windows 7 or Snow Leopard until they are tested by UDit. Like all other operating system upgrades, UDit is testing Windows 7 and Snow Leopard for compatibility with our existing supported software and systems.

When we confirm that UD supported software applications and systems work seamlessly with the new operating systems, we will notify you that they are available for deployment.  We anticipate that distribution and support of Windows 7 and Snow Leopard will occur during the spring term. Until then, our help to you on these operating systems is on a best-effort basis and may require service fees.
